The Challenge
Increased energy costs, climate protection, waste of resources—there are many reasons for using energy efficiently. For companies, increased power consumption in data centers or suboptimally used servers therefore represent both economic and ecological challenges. Our customer Vodafone was looking for a solution to identify infrastructure systems with high energy consumption and replace them with more energy-efficient components. The goal was to reduce the data center's carbon footprint and costs. The solution had to run automatically, as manual measurement in the data centers would have taken almost a month.
Our solution
Before the project started, we checked if a standard product could be a solution. Because of the high license fees for the right tools, a new development—along with the advantage of custom solutions—was the better option. Using the low-code platform Oracle Application Express (APEX), an AI solution was developed that measures and analyzes the current power consumption of the internal IT infrastructure (compute, storage, and network). The data is stored centrally in the Oracle database and evaluated using APEX.
The result
The APEX solution enables the automated identification of energy-inefficient infrastructure reliably and in just a few hours. Our customer was able to replace the relevant components or transfer them to the public cloud. Vodafone can use the data to save energy resources and therefore CO2.
TL;DR: The most important points in a nutshell
Customer benefits
- Identification of "energy wasters"
- Cost and energy savings
- No license fees for the low-code platform Oracle APEX
