One platform for all - content centralized with DevOps
The Challenge
An international industrial group used a large network of intranet sites for internal communication. HyPlus was commissioned to build a central platform (Universal Content Platform, or UIP for short) that would bring all intranet sites together. The new platform was to be implemented with a consistent design in line with the company’s rebranding. The individual websites were hosted on different web servers, content management systems, and hosts. The challenge was to secure the data and content and integrate them into a unified, future-proof, and flexible platform.
Our solution
In order to make the software available to all internal customers quickly, simultaneously, and securely, a very high degree of standardization and automation was required (CD/CI pipeline). A DevOps process was chosen for the implementation of the project. Thanks to the agile approach, the numerous change requests were implemented efficiently. Architecture: First, we used a cloud application stack. Different services are available depending on the cloud provider. The services we selected form the basis for a platform we developed ourselves, which enables rapid application development and integration of cloud services. The top layer of the architecture consists of the specific applications, such as the UIP. UIP architecture: A microservice architecture was used for the UIP application on which the websites run. This ensures the required flexibility.
The result
HyPlus was primarily responsible for developing the UIP, which included Angular front-end applications and microservices implemented using Node.js. During the platform’s development, we further refined the Docker images for the microservices and wrote the YAML files for our applications. The technical aspects of DevOps were extensively utilized in the UIP project. A fully automated CD/CI pipeline was employed. Changes made by developers were automatically built and deployed to the development environment. A release was deployed fully automatically to the test environment and—upon approval by the business side—distributed to all production environments with a single click.
