Real-time data platform in the cloud enables new service offerings
The Challenge
As the market evolves and customer needs grow, the demands placed on data platforms often increase as well. Existing on-premises platforms that have evolved over time quickly reach their limits and come with drawbacks in terms of flexibility, scalability, and performance. For companies, however, the timely and comprehensive analysis of data is critical to competitiveness—and enables new services for end customers. The existing data platform no longer met the customer’s needs, particularly with regard to future use cases and customer requirements. Therefore, the company, together with HyPlus, decided to replace the legacy system by building a modern, flexible, and scalable fast-data analytics platform in the cloud. The goal was to provide and analyze continuous industrial process data and visualize it in real-time dashboards. To avoid disrupting ongoing business processes, the platform had to be replaced in the shortest possible time.
Our solution
At the start of the project, HyPlus conducted a comprehensive comparison of relevant platform providers. To this end, workshops were held with key stakeholders to define the project’s specific requirements. Together, they decided that a combined use of Microsoft Azure and Cloudera Data Platform was the most sustainable and suitable solution. By establishing a joint development team, early and ongoing knowledge-building at the customer’s site was ensured. Subsequently, the cloud infrastructure was set up and the use case’s data pipeline was implemented as a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) to evaluate the suitability of the tools and services proposed by the providers (in this case, Microsoft and Cloudera) for the customer’s specific needs. The MVP was then scaled up to production readiness and successfully put into operation.
The result
Thanks to close and goal-oriented collaboration, the use of agile methods such as Scrum and extensive testing, a modern data platform in the cloud, including a real-time dashboard, was set up within the specified eight months. The company is now in a position to roll out structurally identical environments in an automated and reproducible manner. Compared to the previous on-premise architecture, the management and scaling of the systems has been significantly simplified or made possible in the first place.
