The Challenge
Generating practical knowledge—that is the core mission of the AOK Scientific Institute (WIdO). It provides in-depth expertise across all areas of statutory health insurance, with a particular focus on patient care. The WIdO has two main areas of focus: First, the research and development work it conducts supports the AOK community in particular in ensuring high-quality and cost-effective healthcare. Second, it focuses on research, teaching, and the further development of statutory health insurance. With the AOK’s integrated data, library, and analytics platform (DiAna), users within the AOK community are provided with a powerful database. Analyses are based on anonymized claims data from the 27 million AOK insured individuals spanning several years, as well as a wide range of medically and pharmaceutically validated guidelines. This provides a flexible and high-performance analysis tool that enables AOK experts—for example, in medicine, pharmacy, contract drafting, or controlling—to answer questions without programming knowledge, using big data and complex classification systems. HyPlus successfully applied for a tender issued by WIdO—the R&D unit within the AOK group—and was awarded the contract because its portfolio and long-standing partnership with MicroStrategy perfectly met the client’s requirements. Furthermore, HyPlus Solutions had demonstrated its MicroStrategy expertise in previous projects.
Our solution
HyPlus was responsible for the entire front-end implementation using MicroStrategy in the AOK’s DiAna project. A MicroStrategy Intelligence Server, a separate MicroStrategy Web Server, and the MicroStrategy Enterprise Manager were installed and configured. During the course of the project, HyPlus Solutions gathered the requirements and developed the architecture for the DiAna application. Based on this architecture, the data model was implemented in MicroStrategy. To build the report library, it was necessary to develop a complex, three-level nested filter structure that utilized various report objects (filter reports, prompts, etc.). Building on this, HyPlus Solutions was able to design additional metrics, reports, and documents. In collaboration with WiDO’s DWH team, HyPlus Solutions was able to optimize the execution time of reports from the library through VLDB settings and changes to the data model. Since the functionalities of MicroStrategy Web did not meet the requirements of the DiAna application, it was also necessary to make various customizations using the MicroStrategy SDK. This included, among other things, the implementation of an automatic import of several thousand report definitions from an external database. An export function was also implemented, allowing report definitions to be saved from MicroStrategy Web to a CSV file. For mass backup, further processing, and editing, a bulk export was also implemented, which exports the thousands of report definitions from MicroStrategy to a database. In addition, it was necessary to adapt the user interface functionalities on the input side (responding to prompts) for reports in MicroStrategy Web. Finally, various display formats in MicroStrategy Web were modified to ensure better usability. Another task in the project was training project participants. The main focus here was on administration, the use of Report Services, and project design. Building on the user community’s positive experiences with DiAnaclassic, an agile approach was used to develop additional applications such as DiAnalight—a streamlined version of DiAna designed for interactive exploration of AOK performance data—as well as DiAnamobile, a mobile app that enables such analyses on iOS devices. The app runs on “BlackBerry Secured” and employs all modern security standards necessary for handling sensitive data.
The result
The customer was provided with a future-proof application (GIS analyses, mobile, self-service, etc.) on the basis of which further development for new functionalities/analyses can be built (e.g. time series, map display, predictive analysis, R integration, etc.).
